An acting Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Divulapitiya police station was taken into custody yesterday (2) by Criminal Investigative Department (CID) for the death in custody of 50 years old Kaiwala Appuhamilage Gamini Edward who died while he was under Divulapitiya police custody at Negombo prison. And till 4 th January, 2018 Magistrate ordered to keep him in remand.
The report of Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) of Negombo hospital clearly says cause of dead is due to internal injuries. Gamini Edward was arrested on 2 nd October 2017, in suspicion of robbing a property and was produced before the Minuwangoda Magistrate's Court on 3 rd October, 2017. He was ordered to be remanded until the 10 th January, 2018 and he was later admitted to hospital after serious injuries and died succumbed to injuries.
It is reported that, Divulapitiya police had visited the house of Gamini Edward's and caught him and forced him to plead guilty of steeling things. But he refused to do, since he was not related to the incident (steeling). Then was arrested and later remanded by the police officers attached to Divulapitiya Police Station, and had assaulted him from time to time continuously.
