A young resident of Thirimanagama, Haputale was found hanged dead at the cell of Pettah police station after he was arrested on 10th January 2018 at Bastian Mawatha, Pettah for having illegal drugs with him.
An inquiry was held under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General of Police at Police Headquarters. After the inquiry, the Officer in Charge (OIC) of Pettah police station has been transferred to Batticaloa.
Speaking to media, Mr. Saliya Peries (Attorney-at-Law), Commissioner of Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, has suggested to Inspector General of Police (IGP), creating an independent Unit to inquire the extra judicial killings and deaths in custody since it continues unendingly.
