54th UNHRC session to commence on Monday (11)

The 54th session of the Human Rights Council is scheduled to convene at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

This regular session will span from September 11th to October 13th, 2023.

Commencing at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 11, Ambassador Václav Bálek from the Czech Republic will preside over the opening ceremony.

The opening address will be delivered by Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Throughout the session, the Council will engage in 29 interactive dialogues with Special Procedure mandate holders, expert mechanisms, and investigative bodies.

The session will also feature the presentation of reports and oral updates on the human rights situations in various nations, including Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Nicaragua.

The Human Rights Council, comprised of 47 member states within the United Nations system, is tasked with strengthening the promotion and safeguarding of human rights worldwide.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly on March 15, 2006, its primary mission is to address instances of human rights violations and provide recommendations in response.
