
Amitha Priyanthi was awarded the Human Rights Defender of the Year 2025 at the International Human Rights Day Commemoration held on 11 December at the BMICH, organised by the Right to Life Human Rights Centre
This prestigious recognition honours her unwavering struggle for justice following the killing of her brother, Lasantha, in an attack by the Payagala Police. Her courageous legal battle contributed to the landmark Iddamalgoda vs. Sriyani Supreme Court judgment, a historic verdict that significantly strengthened the protection of the Right to Life in Sri Lanka. Even after 25 years, her pursuit of justice continues, symbolising resilience and determination in a context marked by prolonged impunity.
Over the past two and a half decades, Amitha Priyanthi has emerged as a powerful human rights defender, standing in solidarity with hundreds of victims of human rights violations across the country. Her dedication, courage, and compassion have provided hope and strength to many seeking justice and accountability.
The Right to Life Human Rights Defender Award of the Year was presented to Amitha Priyanthi during the International Human Rights Day Commemoration in recognition of her unique and invaluable contribution to Sri Lanka’s human rights movement.
