“Sandhara Monaragala” Social Enterprise Initiative to Launch on June 10 Under Sandhara Social Entrepreneurship Network

A new milestone in community-based entrepreneurship and sustainable development is set to begin in Monaragala as the “Sandhara Monaragala” social enterprise initiative officially launches on June 10, 2026, under the Sandhara Social Entrepreneurship Network.

The initiative is being implemented through the Human Rights and Social Entrepreneurship Development Centre (HRSEDC) – Monaragala, in collaboration with the Community Resource Protection Centre (CRPC). The programme is designed to create sustainable income opportunities for rural communities while strengthening community resilience through entrepreneurship.

“Sandhara Monaragala” reflects a vision of building community-led enterprises that empower vulnerable groups while creating long-term social and economic impact. The initiative focuses on reducing economic hardships faced by rural families by supporting practical, locally grounded business opportunities.

The project supports low-income families, small producers, and aspiring entrepreneurs in Monaragala who often face challenges such as limited market access and financial instability. Through this initiative, participants are guided to develop their products, improve quality, and reach wider markets in a sustainable way.

A special focus has been placed on locally produced food and traditional village-based products, including:

  • Kithul products
  • Kavum and other traditional food items
  • Green gram  and kurakkan Powder
  • Curry leaves powder and local herbal products
  • Coconut-based products including coconut oil and coconut shell products
  • Spices such as chili powder, curry powder (thunapaha), turmeric, and pepper
  • Palmyrah-based products such as mats and baskets

These products represent the richness of local knowledge, agriculture, and traditional industries in the Monaragala district.

Under the initiative, products developed by entrepreneurs will be marketed through the CRPC trade platform, where producers themselves will take part in managing sales and distribution. Products will reach customers through local trade centres, exhibitions, weekly markets, and distribution to other districts, ensuring better market access for rural producers.

What makes “Sandhara Monaragala” unique is its strong connection to social impact. Under this model, 75% of profits will be distributed among participating entrepreneurs to strengthen their livelihoods, while 25% of profits will be allocated to support human rights protection efforts and provide assistance for those in need.

As Monaragala prepares for the official launch on June 10, “Sandhara Monaragala” stands as a powerful example of how local entrepreneurship, traditional knowledge, and community collaboration can come together to create sustainable development and lasting change.
