Commemorative Note on the Passing of Mr Basil Fernando, Prominent Asian Human Rights Defender and Lawyer

The Right to Life Human Rights Centre expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of the late Mr Basil Fernando, a leading human rights defender and lawyer in Asia.

We gratefully acknowledge that Mr Basil Fernando was a leader who made an immense contribution towards the establishment and strengthening of the Right to Life Human Rights Centre over the past two decades.

His ‘Urgent Appeals’, which drove a massive campaign against cruelty and torture across Asia, commanded the utmost respect of all.

Mr Basil Fernando also worked to put the concept of people’s schools into practice to elevate the rights, knowledge, and understanding of the oppressed.

Having resided in Hong Kong since 1989, he accomplished a monumental amount of work in training human rights defenders and lawyers, and in raising awareness within society. Notably, he provided support for a substantial number of cases concerning cruel and inhuman torture committed in Sri Lanka.

The impact he made on human rights in the international arena over a period of more than 35 years, both in Asia and globally, is by no means insignificant. He garnered immense recognition in South Korea, as well as in other Asian countries.

What Mr Basil Fernando bequeathed to the entire world was his unwavering commitment to human rights and democratic values. That unchanging, exceptional dedication remains a magnificent example for future generations.

As a poet, writer, lecturer, and trainer, he also made a significant contribution to society.

May our highest tributes be offered to this great humanitarian who raised his voice for human rights throughout his entire life!
