Everything that could happen is over to me! – Shani Abeysekera

“I haven’t do anything wrong.  Everything I want to be is over now.  I gladly accept even the loss of my life.  Usually, police officers are charged with money laundering, harassment, and assault.  I am glad I have not received such an accusation so far.  I do not know if such an allegation will be made this evening after this.

Former Director of the Criminal Investigation Department Shani Abeysekera made these statements while giving evidence before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Easter attacks.

After my suspension, the Police Commission recommended in April 2020 that I be paid half of the salary, but it has not yet been implemented.  I used my job for innocent people.  But today it has made it impossible for my wife and two children to go down the road.  Two media channels publish wrong information about him. I have done nothing wrong but almost everything that should have happened now.  Even if I lose my life, I gladly accept it.

Shani Abeysekera testified before the Presidential Commission to Investigate the Easter Attack from the Colombo National Hospital via video technology under the guidance of a Senior State Counsel from the Attorney General’s Department.

The Presidential Commission to Investigate the Easter Attack has stated that the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department Shani Abeysekera has been investigating the conspiracies to assassinate four Presidents.

The four investigations into the Town Hall bombing of Chandrika Bandaranaike, the bombing of the Pittala Junction when the current President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was the Secretary to the Ministry of Defense, the conspiracy to bomb Maithripala Sirisena when he was a Minister and the conspiracy to assassinate Mahinda Rajapaksa are being investigated by Shani Abeysekera

The State Counsel inquired about the investigations carried out by Shani Abeysekera and he stated that the Delkanda murder, the assassination attempt on Sarath Fonseka, the Angulana double murder, the Royal Park murder, the extortion of Rs. 20 million, the extortion of 200 lakhs. He has been investigating a number of controversial incidents, including the murder, the rape and murder of an 80-year-old woman in Thanamalwila, and said he was overseeing about 8,000 investigations when he was transferred from the CID.

He also said that he had carried out investigations into the murders of Bharatha Lakshman, Mohammad Siyam and Raviraj, the disappearance of 11 youths in 2007-2009, the Welikada prison massacre, the disappearance of Prageeth Eknaligoda, the murder of Thajudeen, the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge and the shooting in Rathupaswala.  He also stated that he had carried out inquiries into the placement.

Attorney-at-Law Upul Kumarapperuma, who appeared for Shani Abeysekera at the hearing, said that there was no time before the commission of inquiry and that his client would be offended if something went wrong.  Mr. Upul Kumarapperuma has pointed out that the CID had handed over the investigation files to Mr. Abeysekera about two hours before the hearing.
